What is ASIST?

ASIST - Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training - is designed to help you become more willing, ready and able to help persons at risk of suicide. It is an intensive, interactive and practical course designed to help caregivers learn how to intervene to prevent the immediate risk of suicide.


Who is it for?

ASIST is suitable for everyone including: community members, mental health professionals, nurses, teachers, counsellors, youth workers, police and faith leaders.


What are the training goals?

As an ASIST-trained first aid intervention caregiver, you will be better able to:

suicide prevention
identify people who have thoughts of suicide.
suicide beliefs
understand how your beliefs and attitudes can affect suicide interventions.
suicide understanding
seek a shared understanding of the reasons for thoughts of suicide and the reasons for living.
suicide risk
review current risk and develop a plan to increase safety from suicidal behavior for an agreed amount of time.
suicide safety
follow up on all safety commitments, accessing further help as needed.
